ChatGPT Starts Showing Ads: What Users Need to Know

ChatGPT is entering a new phase of its business model.

OpenAI has introduced advertising in ChatGPT, giving eligible users another way to access the AI service while creating a new revenue stream for the company.

The change is significant because ChatGPT has traditionally operated mainly through free access, subscriptions and business products. Advertising could now become another major part of OpenAI’s strategy.

Who Will See ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI says ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans in markets where advertising is available.

Paid plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free. OpenAI also says advertisements are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.

The rollout is being expanded gradually, so the experience can differ depending on the user’s country and account.

Where Do the Ads Appear?

Advertisements can appear below a ChatGPT response rather than being inserted directly into the AI-generated answer.

They are labelled as sponsored content and visually separated from the response. This distinction is intended to make it clear that an advertisement is paid placement rather than part of ChatGPT’s answer.

For example, someone asking ChatGPT about a product category could receive an advertisement related to that conversation.

Can Advertisers Influence ChatGPT’s Answers?

OpenAI says they cannot.

According to the company’s current advertising policy, advertisers do not have the ability to shape, rank or modify ChatGPT’s responses. An advertisement appearing in a conversation does not mean OpenAI is recommending the advertised company or product.

This separation will be important as ChatGPT increasingly becomes a tool people use to compare products and make purchasing decisions.

What Happens to User Privacy?

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal information.

Instead, advertisers receive aggregated information about advertising performance, such as views and clicks. OpenAI also provides controls that allow eligible users to manage aspects of ad personalization.

One important detail is that even when personalized advertising is disabled, advertisements can still be selected based on the context of the current conversation in markets where ads are available.

Why Is OpenAI Doing This?

AI services are expensive to operate. Every ChatGPT interaction requires computing resources, while OpenAI continues to invest in models, infrastructure and new features.

Advertising gives OpenAI another way to generate revenue from people who use ChatGPT without paying for a premium subscription.

It also opens a potentially valuable market: people often use ChatGPT while researching products, comparing options or deciding what to buy. OpenAI’s advertising platform is specifically designed to reach users during these decision-making moments.

Will ChatGPT Become Like Google or Social Media?

Advertising could make ChatGPT more similar to other major internet platforms, but the format is different.

Instead of placing traditional banner advertisements around a webpage, ChatGPT can display sponsored content alongside a conversation where the user is actively researching a topic.

That creates an opportunity for advertisers, but it also puts greater responsibility on OpenAI to maintain a clear boundary between paid promotion and AI-generated information.

Can Users Avoid the Ads?

Users who prefer an ad-free experience have options depending on their plan and region.

OpenAI offers ad-free paid plans such as Plus and Pro. It also provides an ads-free option for eligible Free users, although using the free ad-free experience comes with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features.

Temporary Chats also do not show advertisements.

What This Means for ChatGPT’s Future

ChatGPT is no longer relying only on subscriptions and business customers to generate revenue. Advertising is becoming another part of OpenAI’s strategy.

For users, the key difference is simple: Free and eligible Go users may see sponsored content, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users remain ad-free.

The success of this model will ultimately depend on whether OpenAI can make advertising useful to businesses without compromising the experience and trust of ChatGPT users.
